They sub-divide New Testament vocabulary into parts of speech (e.g., nouns, verbs, pronouns, conjunctions and so on) and then list words by frequency. And Wiktionary has an interesting variation on the frequency list in their article ‘Concordance: New Testament Greek’. On-line, the Institute of Biblical Greek website currently has frequency lists extending to words used more than 100 times in the New Testament. Bruce Metzger also includes frequency lists in his Lexical Aids for Students of New Testament Greek, although he includes only those words used more than ten times. Trenchard’s Complete Vocabulary Guide to the Greek New Testament, for example, devotes an entire section to a comprehensive frequency list, which includes the number of times each word is used and a brief English definition (for more information on each work or website cited, see below). The words of the New Testament can be divided according to frequency of use, and the more frequently used words studied first.

*** What’s the best way to learn New Testament Greek vocabulary? One could begin with memorizing the first word in a typical koine dictionary (Ἀαρών - Aaron) and proceed through to ὠφέλιμος (useful), but this hardly seems an effective method for most of us.
